Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad concealed his lavish lifestyle from the public while in office, according to reports from various news outlets. The Washington Post, an American publication, claims that videos and testimonies from people who lived near Assad's residence confirm this. Despite trying to maintain a modest appearance in their daily lives, the Assad family was seen transporting expensive belongings out of their home, including Louis Vuitton bags and designer clothing from Dior, Hermes, and Cartier. The residence was also discovered to have numerous luxury cars.
The news comes in the wake of a major offensive by the Syrian opposition, which resulted in the capture of Damascus by rebels on December 8. According to reports, the Syrian army quickly retreated due to low morale, insufficient personnel, and corruption. The Syrian military command announced that Bashar al-Assad's 24-year rule had come to an end, and the former president sought asylum in Russia.
