The local health authority highlighted that the region is classified as an iodine-deficient zone, meaning the soil lacks sufficient iodine, which affects locally grown produce.
Health Risks of Iodine Deficiency
Iodine deficiency can lead to severe health issues, particularly in children and adolescents. These include stunted growth, weakened immunity, and increased susceptibility to infections. Additionally, it can impair intellectual development, cause fatigue, and reduce concentration and memory capabilities.
Recommended Daily Iodine Intake
- Children: 60 – 120 mcg
- Teenagers: 130 – 150 mcg
- Adults: 150 mcg
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women: 220 – 290 mcg
Preventing Iodine Deficiency
